Orthodontics (bracing or k-line)
Wisdom teeth, otherwise known as third molars , are the last set of teeth to develop. Sometimes these teeth emerge from the gum line and the jaw is large enough to allow room for them , but most of the time , this is not the case. More often , one or more of these third molars fails to emerge in proper alignment or fails to fully emerge through the gum line and becomes entrapped or “impacted” between the jawbone and the gum tissue.
The official publication of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry is dedicated to providing valuable information to general dentists , oral surgeons , prosthodontists , periodontists , scientists, clinicians, laboratory owners and technicians , manufacturers , and educators. Implant basics , prosthetics, pharmaceuticals , the latest research in implantology, implant surgery, and advanced implant procedures are just some of the topics covered.
A dental restoration or dental filling is a dental restorative material used to restore the function , integrity and morphology of missing tooth structure. The structural loss typically results from caries or external trauma. It is also lost intentionally during tooth preparation to improve the aesthetics or the physical integrity of the intended restorative material. Dental restoration also refers to the replacement of missing tooth structure that is supported by dental implants.
Endodontic therapy or root canal therapy is a sequence of treatment for the infected pulp of a tooth which results in the elimination of infection and the protection of the decontaminated tooth from future microbial invasion.
A dental prosthesis is an intraoral (inside the mouth) prosthesis used to restore (reconstruct) intraoral defects such as missing teeth , missing parts of teeth , and missing soft or hard structures of the jaw and palate. Prosthodontics is the dental specialty that focuses on dental prostheses. Such prostheses are used to rehabilitate mastication (chewing) , improve aesthetics , and aid speech. A dental prosthesis may be held in place by connecting to teeth or dental implants , by suction , or by being held passively by surrounding muscles. Like other types of prostheses , they can either be fixed permanently or removable; fixed prosthodontics and removable dentures are made in many variations.
Periodontitis , also generally called gum disease or periodontal disease , begins with bacterial growth in your mouth and may end – if not properly treated – with tooth loss due to destruction of the tissue that surrounds your teeth.
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis , prevention , and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The technical term for these problems is “malocclusion” which means “bad bite”.
A diastema is a space or gap between two teeth. It appears most often between the two upper front teeth. However, gaps can occur between any two teeth. A mismatch between the size of the jaw bones and the size of the teeth can cause either extra space between teeth or crowding of teeth. If the teeth are too small for the jaw bone , spaces between the teeth will occur. If the teeth are too big for the jaw , teeth will be crowded.
Crowding is the lack of space for all the teeth to fit normally within the jaws. The teeth may be twisted or displaced. Crowding occurs when there is disharmony in the tooth to jaw size relationship or when the teeth are larger than the available space. Crowding can be caused by improper eruption of teeth (sequence and / or location) and early or late loss of primary teeth.
A scale and polish cleans your teeth very thoroughly. Scaling removes the hard tartar which forms on your teeth like scale inside a kettle. You can’t remove it just by brushing your teeth. Scaling also removes trapped food and plaque containing millions of germs , which can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Stains from coffee , tea , cigarettes or red wine are also cleaned away when your dentist polishes your teeth. A dental hygienist is specially trained and will scale your teeth. If you clean your teeth very thoroughly anyway , your scale and polish will take less time.
